Tena’s Gift

* Anna Tobiacelli (Poland)

There was a little girl Tena living somewhere in the world. She had blond hair and blue eyes and loved stories her dad used to read out loud every evening before going to bed. That way the little Tena got to know a magic world of books. And especially of that one unique book.

The book was a big and old one, without illustrations, which distinguished it from other children books, and with rather raddled dark blue covers. It did not bother the girl, quite the contrary: it made the book precious, unique and mysterious. The moment dad took the book and reading started Tena travelled to the secret world of fairy tales.

You guess, the girl knew many magical things characters living in the book used in their extraordinary adventures in the beautiful but often dangerous world. What was her number one, what would she love to have in her real life? Magic Wand? No, she had enough, did not need more. Travelling in time? Not for her either, too scary. Tena really dreamt of a cap of invisibility. It would be so interesting to observe the world being invisible...

It was only a dream, a dream of a child who understood well that such a dream could come true in fairly tales only.

Time flied, Tena lived her life. But in the morning she turned 18, she found a big blue parcel near her bed. Who could give her that present? Somehow she was sure it was for her...

She opened the box but... there was nothing inside! Tena looked in once more. It was only a small piece of paper on the bottom. The girl took it and read: ‚For children only. Give it to those who have difficulties in understanding others or are too shy to ask adults or... you will know to whome’.

Tena was surprised and concerned: ‚How can I give NOTHING to anybody?’ She closed the box and forgot.

Five years later Tena started her work as a teacher and librarian. Almost every day she met students who did not understand their troubles and people around. She wanted to help them but sometimes words were not enough.

Tena recalled her invisible gift she had got years ago. She took it to school, put in the library and from that day she opened the box every time when talking with sad, confused, hurt or shy students. It was really magic! She did not see anything in the box but students did. But only those who had problems! It was a blue cap, they said.

Many years Tena was lending not only books but also her invisible cap, invisible for her but useful for students. Those who had the cap for some time changed their attitude to others and became more confident, sensitive, helpful and responsible. Invisible things can change the real world as you can see.
