The secret green path

* Georgia Maneta

Mrs Nora Green appeared one day at our school out of nowhere. I remember that day really well because it was a period of great unrest among the students, to such an extent that all the teachers wanted to leave us; so a newcomer asking for a job there was really strange. Mrs Green entered the headmaster's office and closed the door behind her. Some of the kids, me included of course, gathered outside-at a "safe" distance-waiting to see what would happen. She seemed out of this world, Mrs Green. She wore a long, green dress and had long, loose red hair. While walking, a scent was dispersed around-some kind of fresh, cooling breeze... After a few minutes, Mrs Green got out of the office. She was smiling... She had got the job!

No one knew what she taught, but every day, and for the whole day, she would take a different class to teach. That day came at last for my class as well! She was waiting for us at the door, smiling, wearing a dark green dress this time. The classroom was empty-no desks, no chairs, not even a blackboard!. "We are going to do something different today children" she said, and she pusheda door open and...there it was... A stone path inside a leafy place... We were all speechless. We even tried not to breathe for fear of spoiling the birds' song and the gurgling sound of the water... "Go on, kids!" Mrs Green said softly. "Walk as much as you can... But make sure you enjoy the green around you... See it, feel it, smell it... And forget everything that trloubles you...". And so we did... Some kids just walked, others caressed the green leaves, others played with the water. "Nature can work miracles for you, children. Just let it help you, keep it in your heart".

We felt paralyzed by the beauty and the calmness of the place and then...PADAM we were back in the empty classroom!! "It's not fair!!", Toby, the bully of the classroom, shouted. "It was such a little time!!!" "Toby, could you please tell us the time?" Mrs Green smiled at him. Toby couldn't even utter a word. It was 2 o'clock... It was time for us to go home. The lesson was over! "But...how? Why? How did you do that?" Toby demanded. "You see, Toby, you never get bored of nature as soon as you are immersed in it" Mrs Green explained... "It's the green that relaxes you, brings you closer to your real self. All you need to do is be YOU" she went on. "I will not be here for ever, children... But this is my gift to you... Every time you feel angry, or sad or lonely, just close your eyes and you will be in that secret path... And then, trust me, everything will become clearer". There was only silence in the classroom.

We never saw Mrs Nora Green again. Our guess was that another school needed her- and then another- then another... But OUR school...well... Visiting it was a pleasant surprise for everyone...Both the students and the teachers were in an amazing state of mind and calmness.. They always tried to help each other, made everyone feel wanted and loved. And in a case of personal distress they all knew that the secret green path was there, waiting for them...
